The sanctuary at Providence’s Temple Emanu-El was filled for the annual community Yom ha-Shoah commemoration May 1. The deeply moving gathering included a short film by University of Rhode Island students and reciting of victims’ names by members of the Rhode Island Jewish community. The “Never Again Award” was presented to four Rhode Island legislators who were instrumental in passing the bill that requires Holocaust and genocide education in the state’s schools. Music by Judith Lynn Stillman filled the room along with the sounds of Hazamir, the Jewish teen choir, and Anush Avetisyan who performed Armenian melodies.
