The Touro Synagogue Foundation, the not-for-profit organization responsible for educational programming at Touro Synagogue, has been awarded a grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities to present two of America’s leading scholars of the history of Judaism in the United States – Beth Wenger of The University of Pennsylvania and Hasia Diner of New York University. These presentations will be part of the new Judah Touro lecture series which is intended to broaden understanding of Touro synagogue’s history and its role in the history of Newport and America.

The second lecture will be by Beth S. Wenger on May 30th at 7:00 p.m. Wenger is Moritz and Josephine Berg Professor of History and Chair of the History Department at the University of Pennsylvania. Her books include "The Jewish Americans: Three Centuries of Jewish Voices in America," a companion to the 2008 PBS series, "The Jewish Americans."

Wenger’s talk will be titled "Encounters with the 'Holy Land': Place, Past, and Future in American Jewish Culture," and it will be followed by an interfaith discussion on what the Holy Land means to each of the participating communities.
